7 Tips to Enjoy a Smoother Long-Haul Flight

It's nice high up above the clouds, isn't it? But sometimes all these looong flights can turn into a nightmare. On our one-year trip around the world we flew a lot and that's why I'm sharing the following 7 tips for a smoother long-haul flight with you today.

Content

1. Wear comfy clothes

Dress comfortable for long-haul flights. We try to avoid belts because of the security control, and we wear sports shoes, which we also take off during the flight (only when wearing fresh socks, of course!). We use compression socks – your feet will be forever grateful. We also like to put on a hoodie because it can get as cold as in Antarctica on some flights due to the A/C, and I sometimes take a long scarf with me, which I use to cover my head or any other body part.

2. Stay hydrated

The air is very dry inside the airplane, which is why you shouldn’t forget to drink enough water. Always order a cup of water alongside your drink order. And don’t forget about your skin – we always carry a lip balm and some hand and facial cream with us.

3. Don’t forget to eat

There’s food served on almost all international flights. We kind of like the airplane food, but others usually hate it. If you are among them, bring some biscuits, nuts or energy bars. Try to avoid fizzy drinks.

Special tip: If you don’t want to wait for your food, order a special meal during your flight reservation (vegetarian, lactose free…). That way you’ll probably be served before your neighbours.

4. Stretch every now and then

It’s impossible to sit for 5 or 10 hours straight, so stand up, walk around a bit (but not during food and drink service), and do some stretching on your seat.

5. Entertain yourself

If you’re bored, it will feel like your flight took 20 hours (even though it lasted for about 6 hours). Most major airlines have an entertainment system and you should take advantage of it – watch a movie, play videogames, or learn a language. Take a book with you or, even better, a guidebook for your destination. Or simply just take a nap.

6. Don’t be grumpy

Follow the “do not do anything to others, what you don’t want done unto you” philosophy. Every time you strike the seat in front of you with your knee, trust me, the passenger in the front will feel it. And believe me, after the 4th time the person sitting in front of you won’t find it funny anymore. If you recline your seat, put it upright when food is being served, so the people behind you will be able to enjoy their meal properly.

7. Hand luggage

If not stated otherwise, you’re allowed to take with you a small personal bag and another piece of hand luggage by almost all better airlines. So, pack your things because that will ease your flight. Also, don’t forget to take a small towel, a toothbrush and some underwear. Why? Because your checked luggage can be delayed or get lost and it’s always nice to have your things with you.

Bonus tip: If you’re flying internationally, memorise your passport number and its date of issue. You can thank me later.
