Listen to audio excerpt

Commonwealth of Australia

A trip to Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, gives travellers an opportunity to experience holidays, tourism and other areas in Australia which, with an area covering 7,741,220 square kilometres, depicts the life of the modern and Aboriginal Australians. Australia’s capital is Canberra. The entire continent, together with its 8,000 islands, has a population of 23,470,000. English is the official language, but the three per cent of Aboriginal Australians, with more than one hundred tribes, speak just as many languages and dialects. Less than 85 per cent of Australia’s population are of European descent, twelve per cent are Chinese, Indians, Filipinos and Vietnamese, and there’s also some black population, consisting of people that migrated from South Africa, Mauritius, Zimbabwe and Sudan.

Australia consists of six federated states, three internal federal territories and seven overseas territories. The federated states are New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. The three internal federal territories are the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and the Jervis Bay Territory. In addition to the seven overseas territories, namely the Ashmore and Cartier Islands, the Cocos Islands, the Coral Sea Islands, the Heard Island and McDonald Islands, the Norfolk Island, the Christmas Island and the Australian Antarctic Territory, the country also encompasses micronations, such as the Principality of Hutt River, the Independent State of Rainbow Creek, the Empire of Atlantium and others.

Australia’s central part has seen four changes in the past one hundred years. It transitioned from South Australia to the Northern Territory and South Australia, and then to Central Australia, North Australia and South Australia in 1927, later merging again into the Northern Territory and South Australia, with Central Australia ceasing to exist. In 2013, groups of Aboriginal Australians founded their own country that is independent from Australia. They named it the Murrawarri Republic, but it hasn’t been recognised by Australia.

Rent a HERTZ vehicle

The world’s longest road is located in Australia, with the distance of 14,500 kilometres. Compare that to our planet’s diameter, which is 12,742 kilometres. The continent measures about 4,000 kilometres from one end to the other, making it similar to the United States or the distance between Barcelona and Moscow. If you wanted to visit every Australian beach, it would take you thirty years to visit them all.

The Hertz company can help you travel around Australia. It has 255 pick-up locations across the country where you can pick up or leave your road vehicle. Protecting the environment and having positive influence on it means travelling in large groups. Only then are we aware of our carbon footprint, which shows how much carbon dioxide we emit into the environment. You can learn more about carbon offset in tourism and how, as an individual, you can be more aware of offsetting carbon emissions on our new website, Travel Different for Future.

You can take a look at all that Hertz offers when renting a car in the article Travel with Hertz. You can also find useful tips on how to travel around in your car and what to look out for on Australia’s roads in our volunteer’s article about travelling in Australia – The Land Down Under – Part 2

An alternative to renting a car at Hertz is, of course, using the public transport. Australia has trains, buses, ferries and trams. By using public transport for travelling, you produce less greenhouse emissions into the environment, better protecting our planet. Due to their negative effects on the environment, carbon dioxide emissions cause global warming and environmental changes. We’ve prepared a few tips on sustainable tourism and using public transport in our article – How to Travel Eco-Friendly and Have Fun at the Same Time?

Australia and its main features

Before you travel to Australia, it’s good to take a look at some of the basic information about the continent. You can start by decoding Australia’s flag. It represents the country’s relationship with the UK – the Union Jack in the left upper corner shows that Australia was once a British colony. The large star in the lower part symbolises shared prosperity, while the five stars in the right half represent the Southern Cross constellation.

The northern part of Australia has a tropical climate with wet to moist soil and rainforests, while the eastern and western parts have subtropical climate with forests and rain. Southern Australia consists of meadows and wetlands, and the Sydney area has a partly tropical climate with drier parts and colder air. The central part of the continent has more desert areas, such as the Great Victoria Desert and the Great Sandy Desert.

Apart from the capital, Canberra, the island or continent’s largest city is Sydney. Australia’s longest river, the Murray River, flows between Melbourne and Sydney. Native species include birds, such as emu, mammals, such as kangaroo, and plants, such as the golden wattle.

Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia in English, has unique features through which travellers can discover the Australian way of life. It’s good to be prepared before starting your trip and inform yourself about the destination, which is why Hostelling International Slovenia is here – to help you out.
