King’s Day And Tulips in Holland

I have visited Holland a couple of times, but this was my first-time visit during spring. This is actually the best time to visit Holland, not only because you can marvel at the colourful tulips, but also because you can go to the biggest outdoor party in Holland – the Kings' birthday.

What do you need to know?

The whole Netherlands celebrates the King's birthday on 27 April (note that a few years back they celebrated the Queen's birthday which was on 30 April). I was in Amsterdam for King’s Day and this allowed me to see the city in a completely new light. Everyone was outside, in front of their homes selling stuff they didn’t need anymore. They rented out their toilets to tourists for a price of 50 cents, there were concerts everywhere, and the canals were filled with party boats. And everyone, and I mean everyone, was dressed in orange.

If you want to celebrate in a smaller city, then I recommend Utrecht which we really loved, and which is just an hour south of Amsterdam. The city is extremely cute and has everything that Amsterdam has, but it’s smaller and less crowded. We’ve gathered our favourite things to do in Utrecht in this article slovenianstravel.com/2016/11/15/utrecht-romantic-as-it-gets/.

I probably don't have to mention that this is a very busy day, so it's important that you book your accommodation in time.

When we were in Amsterdam, we stayed at the Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark hostel in the heart of the city, close to the old town and the canals. The hostel offers private rooms as well as dorms, provides tourist information, and has a cosy communal space. I shouldn’t forget to mention the breakfast was perfectly balanced and healthy and made with local ingredients.

If you decide to stay in Utrecht, don't miss the Stayokay Utrecht Centrum hostel. It’s a completely new hostel with a great restaurant, cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. We loved the railway connections because you can get directly to Utrecht from Amsterdam Airport without changing trains. Rooms and dorms are new and very functional.

I must admit that Holland has become one of my favourite European countries. The people are incredibly kind and open, and the country has something for everyone – architecture, nature, museums, etc.

If you decide to celebrate the Kings' birthday in Holland, drink a beer for me! Until then: Safe travels and lots of fun!
