Alice Springs

Some say it's the heart of Australia. Right in the middle of Central Australia, in the middle of nowhere, Alice Springs is an oasis in the red desert. It's also where Peter Finch finally caught up with Virginia McKenna in the 1956 film classic A Town like Alice.

In August 1956 the world premier of A Town like Alice was held in the Pioneer Outdoor Theatre in Alice Springs, winning BAFTA awards for the two stars who made the trek(potovanje) to Alice Springs to attend(udeležiti se) the opening night. The Pioneer Theatre is now an integral part of the Alice Springs Pioneer YHA – possibly the only YHA in the world in a former(nekdanji) movie theatre!

The YHA is in an ideal location for exploring the town. Built within the walls of the original Outdoor Picture Theatre in the centre of town, the unique(edinstven) atmosphere of this region permeates these heritage(dediščina) buildings.

Darwin

Venture(drzno, avantura) north(severen) to Darwin, the Territory’s thriving top end city. Darwin is a city that has triumphed(zmaga, slaviti zmago, zmagati) through adversity(neprijetnost). In 1942, during World War II, the Japanese dropped more bombs on Darwin than were dropped on Pearl Harbour. Then on Christmas Eve in 1974, 20,000 of the 49,000 residents(prebivalci) were left homeless thanks to the devastating destruction(uničenje) of Cyclone Tracy. 

Today, Darwin is one of the country’s most modern and multicultural cities. Visit Darwin YHA, located on the doorstep of Darwin’s entertainment(zabava) precinct(prostor), with its very own bar opening out on to Mitchell St, in the heart of the action. The hostel’s tour(izlet, tura) desk can arrange trips around Darwin. Spend some time exploring the Tiwi Islands, Kakadu National Park or the sprawling (raztezanje) Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve.
