YHAs top Australian getaways with a twist

(Sydney) – With over 120 hostels Australia-wide, the YHA network has no shortage of unique places to rest your head. YHA Australia has put together a list of their top five hostels with a twist.

Who says travelling on a budget has to be boring?

1. Experience the romance of the rails at Railway Square YHA in Sydney. This hostel offers a unique experience in railway carriage dorms on Central Station’s former platform Zero. The adjacent main building is also an historic 1904 warehouse, which is now converted into contemporary modern accommodation.

2. Winner of the 2007 Best Backpacker Accommodation award, Bungalow Bay YHA on Magnetic Island in Queensland allows you to get up close and personal with some of Australia’s most fascinating creatures. An onsite wildlife sanctuary allows visitors hands-on encounters with koalas and crocodiles. With access to six and a half acres of tropical surrounds and individual A-frame bungalows, it’s a real island retreat.

3. An eco-certified hostel, the Grampians YHA Eco Hostel in Halls Gap, Victoria is stylish, and comfortable accommodation in the heart of the Grampians National Park. The accommodation is powered by solar electricity and utilises green initiatives including solar hot water, rain water collection, recycled greywater and waste recycling to reduce the hostel’s impact on the environment.

4. In August 1956 the world premier of A Town like Alice was held in the Pioneer Outdoor Theatre in Alice Springs, winning BAFTA awards for the two stars who made the trek to Alice Springs to attend the opening night. The theatre is now an integral part of the Alice Springs Pioneer YHA in the Northern Territory – possibly the only YHA in the world in a former movie theatre.

5. Each night, Kangaroo Island YHA in South Australia receives some unique visitors, when the island’s fairy penguins come to roam the gardens and surrounds of the hostel. The island is not only home to penguins – most of Australia’s native flora and fauna can be found on Kangaroo Island.
