34 million visitors have visited the Postojna Cave so far

An important milestone was celebrated at the Postojna Cave on Thursday, 28 July 2011: the 34 millionth visitor was namely recorded on that day. Fortune smiled on a family from the Italian town of Perugia – Mr Giuseppe Schippa was the lucky holder of the visitor ticket with the number which brought the holder the prize of a luxury cruise around the Mediterranean for two people and a signature in the Golden Book of visitors to the Postojna Cave. The Schippa family - the prize winner was accompanied with his wife Cristina and daughter Francesca – had been on holiday at the seaside, but they left the coast a day sooner than planned and decided to make a stop in Postojna to visit the Cave. Mr and Mrs Schippa had been to the Postojna Cave years ago, but this time they wanted to show it to their six-year old daughter.

A symbolic consolation prize was also given to the two visitors who had bought tickets right before and after the 34 millionth guest and thus missed the main prize by a whisker; they were Mr Roman Roman Orenič from the Czech Republic and Mr Tomasz Wcislo from Poland.

Visitor statistics have in the Postojna Cave been kept since 17 August 1819, when Archduke Ferdinand I, the then heir to the Austrian throne, was the first official visitor to sign the visitor book and thus laid the foundation for modern tourism. Since then the Postojna Cave has welcomed 34 million visitors from all over the world. Jubilee postcards were given on this occasion to all guests, who were then able to have them stamped with a special stamp and post it from the underground post office in the Concert Hall of the Postojna Cave and thus send the news of our celebration into the world.
