European capital Copenhagen

How to spend a weekend in one of the European capitals?

Each and every European capital is special. One offers you architectural attraction, the other takes you to a whole other culinary world and the third takes you in a fairy-tale world. And that’s what happened in a Danish city Copenhagen that I also called “the city that takes you to your childhood”.

Copenhagen definitely took me to my childhood in the moment when I stepped into the museum Ripley’s. I became a little girl in the world of Hans Christian Andersen. He was born in 1805 and he took us to the world of The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Pea and so on.

On the picture, you can see the statue of the Little Mermaid, which is one of the most photographed attractions in Copenhagen. Let me just shortly describe the story of The Little Mermaid. In the story, the Little Mermaid saves the life of the prince, who was shipwrecked and decides to take a risk and seduce him. To become human, she has to give up her voice and her fins. She can become human only if the prince returns his love and doesn’t marry some other woman, otherwise she will die with a broken heart and turn into surf. The Little Mermaid charms the prince but he doesn’t fall in love with her. He marries a princess from a neighbouring kingdom and breaks Little Mermaid’s heart. She could become human if she’d kill the prince but she doesn’t do it and throws herself in the waves. Her body changes into surf and her soul become a ghost, daughter of the air.

In the Danish museum the stories are represented in shape of statues that move and speak. A part of the Ripley’s museum takes you in the world of wonders. Did you know that Mr. Wadlow is the tallest person in the world and is 272 cm tall?

What else can we see in the city of fairy-tales?

We can go to Rundetaarn , to the round tower. It isn’t round only from the outside, but also in the inside. The way up is spiral and makes 7,5 circles to get to the top. You can also step on a glass floor and look down and see yourself 25 metres above everyone. But don’t worry, everything is perfectly safe.

The top of the tower offers a panorama of the whole city and maybe you can get an idea on what to see next. Why wouldn’t you visit a church in Christianhavn area. It was so beautiful from the tower so it has to be interesting. The way to the church is a little long but you will rest your eyes on the Danish canals, where boats can take you on a trip or just decide to watch the boats sailing through the canals and the way to the church will go by very quickly. The sun was shining, the smell of the sea was spoiling me and when I got hungry, I bought a Belgian waffle. On the way I stopped at the market and bought some strawberries. To stop at a park, I said to myself.

And I came to the Saviour’s church, where you can also go on top of the church to get the amazing view. Well, it certainly isn’t a relaxing walk up the stairs to get to the highest point of the church. But the view was amazing.

I could see how far I came from above. And I could decide where my next stop will be. It wasn’t the most visible, but I saw the path I have to take. And it was to the city centre.

Because it’s the most beautiful part of Copenhagen, you have to take your time and sit down at a restaurant by the water and enjoy the moment. Yes, I’m talking about the city centre, the beautiful Nyhaven. Every house is different colour.

The city has a lot of parks that just wait for you to lie down on a freshly cut grass and enjoy yourselves. Tivoli park is the most famous one, which is also an amusement park.

And Danish, this beautiful language. The locals also speak very good English. If you like to cycle, this is the easiest way to get around the city. Danish are known as very keen cyclers. And I would also like to mention “smorrebrod”, which is translated as open-face-sandwich. It is a sandwich that doesn’t have the upper layer of bread.

And if you want to also go to Sweden, you have a direct connection to the Malmo city. Hop on the train and in an hour, you can be in another country.

Travelling around Europe is great for a short break, to get to know a part of foreign culture, language and food. It is also nice that you can find all the information you need on the internet. One of many great websites is http://europa.eu/readyforeurope/#/en. It offers a lot of useful information, photos, motivational video and even a map.
