Where history comes alive!!!

Imbedded in a picturesque setting shaped by the rivers Rhine and Moselle and four low mountain ranges is the environment of the 2000-year-old town of Koblenz. The abundance of cultural monuments and historic buildings, cosy lanes and narrow alleyways, the relaxed and inviting atmosphere of squares and river promenades make Koblenz an appealing town where visitors feel at home easily.

Enjoying the local specialties like tasting the well known wine raised on the steep slopes along side the rivers is a unique experience, highly appreciated already by Thomas Jefferson and Queen Victoria in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is a choice of beer gardens and wine taverns offering various opportunities to get a taste of what makes this spot so distinctive.

Visitors following the trail of Koblenz’ past find themselves caught up in the history of a town which was captured by the Franks for centuries, chosen as residence by German prince electors, conquered by the French and fortified by the Prussians. Koblenz is truly an urban place reflecting European history quite impressively.

Fortress walls and towers, castles and palaces, monuments and parks paint a vivid picture of the town’s eventful past. Koblenz was conquered by foreign armies and has seen princes, kings, emperors and presidents. Today visitors from all over the world enjoy discovering the history and rich cultural heritage of this old town.

The view from the fortress »Ehrenbreitstein«, 118 metres high above the Rhine, down to »Deutsches Eck« (»German Corner«) across the river with its re-erected equestrian statue of Emperor William I is spectacular. Koblenz is doubtlessly an attraction for international visitors and an excellent starting point for trips in the fascinating landscape along the rivers Rhine and Moselle.

Koblenz also marks the beginning/end of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, an acknowledged UNESCO world heritage.

The 65-kilometres-stretch of the Middle Rhine Valley lined with many castles, historic landmarks of any kind and vineyards display the long history of human involvement in a varied, impressing and natural as well as cultivate landscape. It is intimately associated with history and legends and has had a powerful impact on writers, artists and composers.

As part of the fortress »Ehrenbreitstein«, a completely refurbished youth hostel opened recently. Modern accommodation and historic architecture form an interesting harmony. Guests of the youth hostel have an exiting view across the valleys of the two rivers.

Koblenz will be the host of the national horticultural show in 2011 – and the youth hostel Koblenz is located right on site.

The hostel Koblenz is suitable for any kind of hostellers – for families, for groups and for individual travellers. At present it disposes of 157 beds, in 1-, 2- or 4-bedded rooms with ensuite sanitary facilities.
