Volunteer groups receive free nights at HI-USA hostels during MLK’s 40 Days of Peace

Groups of 10 or more will receive free overnights at one of 12 Hostelling International USA (HI-USA) hostels for each day during their stay that they provide at least two hours of community service. They can receive up to five nights during this promotional program that will run throughout January and February.  This offer is in conjunction with Martin Luther King Junior’s 40 Days of Peace.

This is HI-USA’s 3rd consecutive year participating in 40 Days of Peace, which aligns with our mission to help all gain a greater understanding for the world and its people.   New this year, participants will be required to share about their volunteer experience with other hostel guests, allowing them to reflect on their service.  This effort allows guests to learn more about the community they’re visiting, and allows volunteers to meet travelers from all over the world and better understand what hostelling is all about.

Groups are self-organized and must go through an application process to receive this special offer.  Participating hostels include:

HI-Austin
HI-Boston
HI-Chicago
HI-Houston
HI-Los Angeles, Santa Monica
HI-Lucas Malabar Farm
HI-Madison
HI-New York
HI-Portland, Northwest
HI-San Diego Downtown
HI-San Francisco City Center
HI- Washington DC

While groups may have a volunteer project already in mind, HI-USA is also happy to help match up volunteers with local community projects.

“Since HI-USA is committed to building peace through intercultural understanding, participating in 40 Days of Peace is a natural fit,” says HI-USA National Sales Manager Amanda Dwyer.  “And it’s always gratifying to see the growing excitement around hostelling from those who may be at a hostel for their first time during this experience.”

Robert Burack, a group leader from Flint, MI, who participated in the past remarked, “The hostel was the perfect environment for our group – the hostel community was welcoming, receptive, and the perfect space for sharing ideas.”
