Tourism is one of the world's most important industries that provides jobs many people. Many of us love to travel, discover the world and new cultures. But there are also negative consequences. Too many tourists at one location lead to deterioration of the living environment and conditions for living and non-living nature and for the local population. Read more about this in this article.
In response to mass tourism, which is a major problem for European countries, UNESCO and the European Union have decided to promote places that are not so common among world travellers. They set up a special platform for the World Cultural Heritage of the European Union, knowing that it is not enough to preserve our heritage, it is important that it remains alive and that people are aware that we have to preserve it. Heritage is important because it is an integral part of our history and it teaches us about the past. Cultural heritage is also a popular destination for all travellers, because there is no trip without visiting a castle or exploring a cute town. The main goals of the platform are to persuade people to travel more sustainably in order to stay at one destination for a long time and also to explore places outside the main tourist routes. National Geographic was involved in the production itself, which means there'll be a lot of wonderful photos.
The platform represents 37 different European cultural heritage stories. Each of the cultural heritage sites is classified into one of the categories. The categories are: Ancient Europe, Royal Europe, Romantic Europe and European Underworld. A map of each group is inviting us to explore and click. Clicking on the icon opens up a new world with basic information and great tips for the best possible experience, including how to travel to the final point and what to see. The site focuses on the material cultural heritage, but also presents the intangible cultural heritage, which includes typical celebrations and numerous legends. You can also find a list of famous people who have visited the place before us. The description of the places is complemented by the recommendations of the local population covering various topics, for example recommendations for good pubs or good parties. They also advise you on some nearby places worth a visit. Selected locations are often located next to the most tourist destinations, which really indicates the desire to redirect tourists to other less visited locations. Thus, we are invited to visit the ancient towns of Aquileia and Tarragona near Venice and Barcelona. There are many castles in Europe, and the platform takes us to castles in the immediate vicinity of Copenhagen and Stockholm and to the famous English gardens. Among the more romantic parts of Europe, there are some colourful European cultural landscapes, such as the valley of the Middle Rhine and some wonderful cities, such as Vilnius. True secrets are waiting for you in the European underworld. Discover the wine cellar in France, where people have been producing excellent wine for centuries. Go to the mines in Slovakia, Poland and Germany, where it is especially interesting how they have been turned into museums. And wherever you are on the platform, you will have great photos that invite you to visit those places.
Get into the stories of cultural heritage and get to know Europe, its history and its legends in a new light. Each presentation is written with the help of local guides and local people, and therefore offers a unique view of the soul of Europeans and introduces you to great historical events. Do not forget that history and culture are part of people, so take time to learn about local culture and people. Take the time and stay longer than you intended to. Longer stay gives you the opportunity to experience the location and its secrets more closely. Get mesmerized by places.
