2011 marks the 80th year of Youth Hostelling in Northern Ireland and to commemorate this anniversary you can now purchase a fascinating book outlining the history of YHANI.
In 1931 seven rambling enthusiasts formed the Youth Hostel Association of Northern Ireland (YHANI), an organization dedicated to encourage young people to travel and appreciate the beauty of the countryside.
The work of these early pioneers is celebrated in a new publication entitled 80 Years of Youth Hostelling & the Story of the Mourne Wall Walk. Using archive pictures, information and magazine extracts, the book, compiled by YHANI’s (now known as Hostelling International Northern Ireland) President Paddy McAteer shows how far the province’s youth hostels have evolved since work began at the first building in Mullaghdrin, Dromara.
