Maribor among "Top 10 things to do in 2012" by Lonely Planet
Exploring the old city centre of Maribor has been placed among the “Top 10 things to do in 2012” by Lonely Planet. Maribor, which is sharing 2012’s title of the European Capital of Culture with Guimarães in Portugal, is “an unfound Slovenian pearl” according to Lonely Planet. In terms of tourism, the cultural events in the second largest city in Slovenia are also expected to attract those who ordinarily keep to the settled “Ljubljana – Lake Bled – Triglav National Park" triangle.
And to feel the “competition” in which Maribor has been placed, for the "Top 10 things to do in 2012", Lonely Planet has made the following selection of anniversaries, gatherings and essential destinations to put in one`s diary for 2012: (1) Honour Scott’s Polar Centenary, (2) Follow Napoleon across Russia, (3) Visit Namibia’s protected coast, (4) Go football crazy in Poland and Ukraine, (5) Chase Australia’s Top End eclipse, (6) Meet the Maid of Orleans on her 600th birthday, (7) Discover a new Middle East, (8) Explore Maribor’s Old Town, (9) Play arcade classics at the Smithsonian and (10) Check out Korea’s Expo.
At this point, we would like to present another similar Slovenian-coloured piece of news relating to top ten rankings. The Italian Yahoo ranked Slovenia among the top ten favourite 2012 destinations in light of the forecasts made by Italian tour operators and findings by Italian portals dealing with tourism and the quality-price ratio. Yahoo Italy explains its decision: “Italian and other foreigners love Slovenia because of its prices and diversity of landscape, including its spa resorts that represent ideal holidays for those seeking relaxation and wellness.”
