Malta is the perfect holiday destination whether it’s for sightseeing or adventure. This little island has been formed from a fusion of cultures and historical adventure providing plenty of museums, historical buildings, and beautiful architecture to interest any traveller! Although Malta is small in size, there are so many things to do that we had to list our best picks that absolutely cannot be missed!
Valletta
With a profound historical background, Malta’s thriving capital city deserves a day dedicated to visiting this timeless city. However, if you have only time for one stop, then head straight to St John’s Cathedral. Although there are over 365 churches in Malta, this is the one you do not want to miss! Home to two of Caravaggio’s renowned masterpieces, the Cathedral offers amazing artwork!
Mdina and Rabat
Mdina is not only the old Capital City of Malta, but an entry into a world of delightful history. Besides offering a glimpse into the fascinating medieval life of the Maltese and exhibiting a wealth of historical buildings, this fairy-tale-like city offers stunning views of the island. Whilst there, don’t forget to visit the Catacombs and the Domus Romana in the city of Rabat right next to Mdina.
Beaches
With so many scenic beaches surrounding our coast, it’s difficult to choose our favourite spots! At the top of the list are Golden Bay in Malta and Ramla Bay in Gozo loved by the locals for their glistening golden sand! If you crave crystal clear water, then head to Blue Grotto, Pretty Bay or Blue Lagoon in Comino. And a favourite for both locals and tourists, the Azure Window in Gozo is a famous natural landmark not to be missed.
Prehistoric temples
Older then the pyramids of Egypt, (wow!), the extraordinary prehistoric temples in Malta include Hagar Qim, Mnajdra, the Hypogeum and Ggantija in Gozo.
Gozo
When in Malta, we recommend also visiting the sister island of Gozo! The capital city of Victoria is a typical Gozitan village whilst Marsalforn and Xlendi are quaint seaside towns. When in Victoria take some time to visit The Citadel at one of the highest points of the island. Not far from there, Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary is famous for having healing powers, so make sure to visit!
The three cities and Marsaxlokk
The Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua are full of historical value. Once there, grab dinner at the Vittoriosa Waterfront and take some photos from Senglea Point of the spectacular view! The dynamic fishing village of Marsaxlokk is a favourite with tourists for its great restaurants, vibrant fishing boats, and fantastic energetic outdoor market.
