A Dream Castle

Füssen is the most popular small town in Germany

Neuschwanstein Castle, near Füssen in Bayern, is one of the most popular travel destinations in Germany. The medieval-style castle is like something out of a fairy tale, although it was actually built 150 years ago. It was commissioned by Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, who led a life that itself could have been from a fairy tale.

Ludwig discovered the region around Füssen at a very young age. As King, he liked to come back here in search of peace and isolation. He became more and more engrossed in medieval legends. To him, Neuschwanstein Castle and its elaborate halls and chambers was the incarnation of an ideal romantic dream world.

In total, Ludwig commissioned three castles. However, the slightly gaudy castle Neuschwanstein was a symbol for the King’s increasing tendency to escape from reality. He was more interested in art and music than government affairs. His plans cost more than he could afford. Ludwig was declared insane and was dethroned. He died the very next day at the age of 40 in mysterious circumstances still unknown today.

Neuschwanstein Castle became a landmark that can still be visited today. Visitors come from all around the world to see the unique edifice and its 200 grandiose rooms. However, anybody hoping to take a tour will have to wait a long time; around 1.5 million visitors come each year. No wonder Walt Disney used Neuschwanstein as his inspiration for the characteristic castle featured in his animated films.

Visitors are also impressed by the diverse countryside surrounding the castle. Rolling hills give way to rugged mountains up to 2,000 metres high. Füssen is the highest town in Bavaria, with eleven lakes waiting to be discovered in the nearby lowlands. The region is perfect for hiking, cycling, swimming and more. In winter, the conditions are ideal for skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and tobogganing. At the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle is the museum of Bavarian kings. The life of King Ludwig was documented in several films, and the festival hall in Füssen is currently hosting a musical about the fairy-tale king.

Several medieval alleys and historical buildings, like the city wall, have been preserved. The cosy cafés and restaurants invite tourists to relax and feel at home. Not only is Füssen very well known, it is also extremely popular. Out of 1,000 cities in Germany, Füssen currently has the most hashtags on Instagram.

The youth hostel at the edge of the town, only 10 minutes walk from the centre and the station, is an ideal place to stay the night. The modern and hospitable building has 148 beds, and many of the rooms are equipped with a private shower and toilet. The conservatory has 78 window seats and is a popular meeting place, as it offers a beautiful view of the countryside.

There are many possibilities here: an adventure in the high ropes course, mountain tours, slackline, canoeing, bicycle tours and more. Or how about a visit to a cheese factory?
