It's also Hungary for hikers and ecotourists
Athough not necessarily ’natural’ for purists, thermal baths – or spas, to use a fancy term – may still prove better to experience nature than the celebrated wellness facilities (e.g. the Aquaticum in Debrecen).
Thermal baths: An Embarrassment of Riches
Thermal baths have been used since the dawn of time, ascended to greater glory during the Turkish era, and still remain one of the main tourist attractions of the country, Eastern Hungary being no exception. The beneficial effect of spas on the human respiratory tract, alimentary canal, digestion, muscle pains and even period cramps is widely known and appreciated. Here we must limit their praise to a couple of representative examples.
Hajdúszoboszló
Hajdúszoboszló (best accessed from Debrecen) is known as the Mecca for those with rheumatism. The thermal bath is open all the year round. Its world famous medicinal water can treat more than 40 different health problems. In the thermal bath, complete therapy packages with medical supervision can be requested. The building of the thermal indoor spa was completely rebuilt in 1999. In the modern two-story building therapeutic capacity is now doubled. Four new pools were built, in which new attractive services help visitors to recreate. In the big hall of the spa you can enjoy the basic spa cure in the indoor pools with different water temperatures (32 ºC, 36 ºC, 38 ºC).
Egerszalók - Hot Springs, Salty Dip
Just 5 km from the city of Eger, between the Mátra and Bükk you can find a stunning hot spring, which is a real remedy for weariness. Around the spring, take a look at the crystallized crust made by the salty water. The spa has outdoor and indoor facilities that you can enjoy all year round.
Miskolctapolca – Cave Bath
After enjoying the cultural ‘variegation’ of Miskolc, leave the city, and enjoy a good soak in Miskolctapolca. The settlement is actually a suburb of Miskolc, the village. Its springs were first mentioned in the 13th century. Children will love the lake as it is one of the most beautiful baths in Hungary. The Cave Bath with its indoor and outdoor pools and facilities, some of them are in a large natural cave, is open all the year round. After the dip, walk to the Cave Chapel, a tiny sanctuary made in another cave.
