Unusual Monday, Fresh Air and Snowy Rogla
We changed Monday to Sunday, job to a free day, and couch for a walk 1500 metres above the sea level. Me and my friend Maja went to Rogla on the last November Monday. To get some fresh air. And to taste this year’s winter before it comes to the valleys and embraces everyone in cold weather. We went there to revive some childhood memories and to get a feel of true winter fairy tale.
Quickly after the road sign tells us that we weren’t in Zreče anymore, we got greeted by snow. The path to Rogla is always so magical, despite so many turns. The conifers were already covered by snow, some sun rays are peeking through the treetops and the stream is quietly running on the icy bed where you can see first icicles. We listened to Guns and Aerosmith, sang some choruses and talked about everything and we quickly reached the top of the plateau. Temperature is below 0, sun is shining, wind is blowing (which is typical for Rogla)... we were also welcomed by snow cannons and snow groomers. We’re both used to the crowd, full parking lot, children and skiers who are putting on their ski boots when we come to Rogla. But this was not the case this time. This time we were, next to the workers who were rushing to get everything done, almost the only visitors. The parking lot was empty, and no one has put a shoe in the fresh snow before. What else can you wish for?
We walked to cottage Pesek. It took us an hour until we reached the cottage where some hikers were catching some sun rays and vitamin D. We warmed up with some tea and we also enjoyed a real (and deserved) lunch. Mushroom soup and buckwheat žganci taste completely different in the mountain cottages than at home. Cottage Pesek is even more interesting because there’s a ranch with three Lipizzaner horses nearby. One was enjoying the snow when we were there.
About 2 kilometres from Hotel Planja, near cottage Pesek, is 30 metres high viewing tower. A little dizzy from walking on the stairs, we looked at the nearby peaks. Experts say that you can see all the way to Julian Alps, Triglav, Golica, Donačka Gora, Boč, Paški Kozjak and Mozirska Planina.
We returned to hotel Planja where we left our car. We admired the conical church from the outside. It really is something special. It’s the second highest church in the world above the sea level in Slovenia. It’s interesting because it’s so small, mysterious and unusual.
The novelty in Rogla is a cut wooden village with nine theme houses and a church in the middle. It is located by ski track Union, which is suitable for children, and by the restaurant. It’s named Pohorska dežela and you can find grandmother’s kitchen, forester’s cottage, shepherd’s post, miller’s mill, a forge and an elf’s house there. It’s a great thing for children who will enjoy their skiing and snow in Rogla even more.
