Is it because of the cultural highlights of the city? Is it because of the numerous and significant remains of yesteryears, because of the outstanding achievement in science and modern technologies? Or is it because of the beautiful countryside with all those forests and lakes in which Nuremberg is situated? The region around the city has a very specific flair and provides great quality of life.

Nuremberg is a pulsating city with half a million inhabitants but at the same time a romantic beauty spot. An eventful place and a calm anchor. History-charged and vibrant. It is a city which is conscious of its history but also marked by a dynamic atmosphere of advance.

Look forward to book your stay in our brand new hostel in the former stables next to the Imperial Castle from the 15th century. The hostel just opened its doors after renovation in spring 2013. Enjoy the possibility to visit one of the most beautiful and most comfortable youth hostels in the world. Situated in an impressive castle in the centre of Nuremberg, the house features 355 beds in 93 rooms. Come and live in a place where medieval German emperors once resided.

The Trausnitz Castle was first mentioned in 1261. Before the medieval castle was acquired by the Zengers in the 14th century, it was in possession of the Dukes of Bavaria. Primarily, the history-charged castle is famous because of the Habsburgs Frederick the Fair from Austria. The later emperor of Bavaria Ludwig kept him imprisoned here for 28 months after the Battle of Ampfing in 1322. Both were fighting for the crown imperial. Since 1830, the Trausnitz Castle is in full possession of the Bavarian sovereign and used as a youth hostel. After a substantial renovation it was reopened in 1993. Since then, the adjacent castle called Feldschlössl is also part of the hostel.

The youth hostel is situated in two buildings which both connect historical flair with modern comfort. The Feldschlössl provides 69 beds in 12 rooms and the castle Trausnitz owns 68 beds in 11 rooms. Trausnitz offers a huge variety of sport activities: climbing, canoeing, angling, horseback riding or different kinds of winter sports. The whole year round Trausnitz is full of exciting possibilities. Cycle paths and hiking trails enable the visitors to discover the fairy tale-like “Oberpfälzer” forest. Close to the hostel you can also find a lake with a swimming beach and charter boats for aquatic adventures. Other water parks and outside swimming pools are located in Weiden, Perschen or Schwandorf.

The Veste Oberhaus is a fortress located at the left side of the river Danube on the opposite to the historic city centre of Passau. It was founded in 1219 and used as the residence of the baronial Bishop of the diocese Passau for most of the time. The castle was extended and renewed over the years which can be seen on the façade, where the date 1499 is perpetuated. Between 1250 and 1482, the fortress was beleaguered five times but the sieges were always unsuccessful after all. Twice, in 1298 and 1367, the citizens of Passau tried to revolt against the Bishop. During the secularisation the bishop lost his ownership. Napoleon the First occupied the Veste Oberhaus for his expedition against Austria. In 1805 the fortress had to capitulate to the Austrian army. After the Congress of Vienna the building was used by the Bavarian Army as a fortress but also as a prison. In 1932 the city of Passau became the official owner of the Veste Oberhaus and established the “Oberhausenmuseum”.

The youth hostel is located in the former fortress tavern as well as in the building of the generals. In both buildings the guests are offered an unbelievable view even as far as Bohemia and Austria. In 1998, the hostel was rebuilt and modified into a modern youth accommodation. The house features 129 beds in 29 rooms with 4 up to 12 beds each. The youth hostel offers a lot of different activities like a foosball table, billiard, table tennis or croquet. But you could also discover the universe in the planetarium or give free rein to your creative side in the crafts room.
