What to do in Trapani

The city of Trapani is located on the coast of Sicily and is the capital of the eponymous province. The city has to this day remained an important fishing port and an important starting point for trips to the Aegadian Islands. Trapani is thought to be one of the most romantic cities not only in Sicily but in the entire Mediterranean. You can walk along the long stretches of beaches and visit ancient landmarks at day, and then enjoy a glass of fine wine at a restaurant by the seaside at night. What could be better than this? You’ll notice the city’s prevailing baroque architecture – the cathedral, the Madonna of Trapani, the Saint Augustine church and the basilica – all these buildings are a sight to behold. If you want to get a glimpse of the history, you can head to the Agostino Pepoli Regional Museum. Of course, you can just fly into the city and then go out to explore the island.

What to see in Sicily

Sicily’s most beautiful beach, the San Vito Lo Capo, is located near Trapani and it’s not difficult to guess why it’s deemed the most beautiful. The limestone cliffs of Monte Cofano rise above the sea and offer a wonderful view as well as photo opportunities. Then there are also the famous cities of Palermo and Catania which are also rich in history and beautiful architecture. When visiting Catania, you definitely have to visit Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, where you can climb up to one of the craters. But if you really want to get all the way to the top, then you’ll have to take the cable car, which will cost you 23 euros.

Sicily is also home to three Greek temples – Agrigento, Selinunte and Segesta. And if you’re a fan of the Godfather trilogy, you can follow the path of the film along Sicily’s east coast and around Taormina (which also has an interesting colosseum). Enjoy the wine, olive oil, pasta and gelato!
