Dresden in Saxony is said to be one of the most attractive cities in Germany. It had been completely destroyed in 1945. Now, after reconstruction, the inner city once again has regained its old splendour. At present Dresden is drawing particular attention to the European history of porcelain.
It is called the white gold: 300 years ago, in 1710, king August the Strong founded the first European porcelain manufactory in Saxony. Its exquisite products soon acquired a must-have status for royal dynasties throughout Europe and to this day the Saxon china stands for sophisticated dining culture. A special exhibition was opened in Dresden to mark the 300-years anniversary of the founding. The exhibition relates to the porcelain manufactory in Meissen (with the two crossed blue swords), where this artistic craftwork had its origin. Approximately 700 porcelain items are displayed in the exhibition including some outstanding masterpieces which are meant to shed light on the extraordinary appeal of Meissen china.
In Dresden more than 40 museums offer fantastic insights into the world of art, history and more. The State Art Collections for example are celebrating their 450th anniversary with a series of art events – from Romanticism to contemporary art, from the Old Masters’ picture gallery (»Zwinger«) to the New Masters’ gallery.
Moreover concerts, a short film festival as well as a parade of steamboats on the river Elbe are in the pipeline. Since 2005 the steeple of the well known »Frauenkirche« overtops Dresden’s skyline again. However, the city has a lot more to offer: The old town, nearby castles, Volkswagen, an open air cinema on the banks of the river Elbe etc.
Dresden’s cultural scene blends tradition and the modern age. The Dresden Elbe Valley, a listed UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts lush meadows, magnificent villas, and majestic palaces.
Even though the youth hostel is located next to the city centre, it offers a high standard in a quiet setting. There are 480 beds, 250 of them in rooms with showers and toilets. The youth hostel is well prepared for international guests: 24 hours access, trained staff, tourist information in several languages and booking services rendered at the tourist point as well as a choice of international food.
