Slovenia offers many natural and geographical curiosities and makes it possible to go from the coast over the high mountains with eternal snow and ice to the Pannonia straights within just a few hours. The hills between the mountains and flatlands are called Slovenske gorice, which begin at the second largest city – the city of the Old Wine – Maribor.
Maribor has several hostels, where you can spend a night or few, and even more sights worth of exploring. Beside the magnificent mountain of Pohorje and its rich variety of sport activities, the river of Drava with the oldest grapevine in the world at the riverbank Lent. The city also has many interesting galleries, museums, monuments, parks, cafés, restaurants… you shouldn’t miss.
Ptuj or. Poetovio (in Latin) is a town where old Romans had their military base and even bestowed one of their emperors to the throne. But apart from the rich antique history of Ptuj, the city also had an important medieval history and remained a city of importance ever since – which you can get to know at the city castle, which is (in my opinion) one of the best Slovenian museums.
From Ptuj you can continue to the straights of Panonia, where – if you’re a lover of flowers – you should not miss visiting the world of orchids: Ocean Orchids in Dobrovnik – on the other side of the river Mura.
Ljutomer also has other interesting things you should explore, such as parks, architecture, sport events (especially horse races) and each summer there’s the Grossman festival. As a city of culture Ljutomer also has many other places worth to visit.
