Are you outgoing, enthusiastic, open minded and speak fluently English? Want to see more of the world? Discover new places, make new friends, improve language skills and gain confidence? Then this social volunteering program is just for you. HI Norway established this program for volunteers who will play an integral role in fulfilling the mission of promoting global understanding through travel. You can be one of those people for whom their time, friendly attitude, energy, skills, and enthusiasm will make a difference. And gain a lot in return.

What will you do?

Social volunteer takes a role of originator and is the one “who presses the start button”. Tasks comprise fun and interesting activities such as excursions, sports, games, quizzes, barbecue, cultural kitchen, talk, hikes, fishing, sightseeing, coffee and cookies, waffle baking, music - all in the name of cultural exchange and bringing people together. Special emphasis is perhaps on coffee and cookies when the social volunteer presses the conversation start button. This is the time for sharing and listening to all kinds of stories told by people who have different cultural backgrounds and come from all over the world and it is also a perfect platform for spontaneous agreements on future joined activities.

As a volunteer you are a representative of HI Norway and in that manner acting professionally is also significant. That means to respect the rules of hostel you are staying at. By becoming an important part of HI Norway, you will be expected to assist in the marketing, promotion and development of Hostelling International, Western Norway and sustain and promote volunteer program. In that way you will have a chance to develop skills that can help you in your future employment. You can also write blog about your experiences and adventures. Your work will be used in campaigns for promoting the hostelling experience and the social volunteer program.

How does it work?

The program usually includes stays at different hostels in Norway. The shortest stay is 6 weeks and maximum is 6 months. You will start in Bergen Hostel Montana with an introductory program where you will also carry on as social volunteer. After a period of time (3-6 weeks) you continue to the next hostel and so on. It goes without saying that accommodation and breakfast are included. A weekly food allowance for dinner is also provided. Generally, volunteers cook in the common kitchen as part of the program. It is true that it will be difficult to separate volunteering services from free time. However, you will definitely have two days a week off.

At the end…

Hopefully the volunteering period will give you confidence from a supportive environment, help you develop skills which will be useful in your future employment or education – and will provide you with an intercultural dimension useful in all aspects of life. You will also get your certificate stating that you have acquired skills related to your personal, educational and professional development through non-formal learning. Last but not least – you will meet new interesting people, travel round the Norway, and make memories for a life time.

The volunteers will be vital contributors to the future of hostelling by providing innovative ideas, resources, and serving as hostelling ambassadors in their local communities. Why wouldn’t you be one of them? For more information click HERE or visit web page www.volunteering.no.
