Principality of Liechtenstein

Tax Haven for Entrepreneurs

We know very little about the little country Liechtenstein. It is located between Switzerland on the west and Austria on the east and hides a lot of attractions. It is one of the smallest countries in the world with a little more than 35000 people. They almost don’t know crime here. The last homicide was in 1997. Everyone, who is sentenced for more than two years, goes to prison to Austria. House doors are usually unlocked, people feel safe, cars don’t lock, it seems like a country from heaven. The official language is German but they mostly don’t use it a lot. Most people speak Alemmanic German.

The capital of Liechtenstein is Vaduz. 5400 people live there. The city offers many attractions. Tourist from the whole world visit it. The city can be also seen with the help of a tourist guide with prior announcement or you can take a ride on tourist train. I went sightseeing with my bike, because I continued cycling to Switzerland. The biggest attraction is the castle, located above the city. Vaduz Castle was first mentioned in documents in 1322. You can not visit the castle, it is closed for visitors. The exception is 15th August when they celebrate national holiday. Prince Hans-Adam II invites all residents of Liechtenstein for a glass of bier and wine after the end of the festival. The visitors can enter the castle’s courtyard but not the inside. In summer there are a lot of festival, the film festival being the most famous. In the centre of the city there’s a building, which looks like it’s from Alpine world. That is the city government building. You can enter with prior announcement in a group. The city also offers free entrance to the post museum, there are also national galleries, red houses, city houses and cathedral, that are worth a visit.

Vaduz isn’t the only town worth seeing in Liechtenstein. If you’re a fan of hiking and winter sports, Liechtenstein is the right choice for you. An interesting fact is that prince Charles comes here to ski every year. Today the country is famous by being a tax haven, taxes are minimal, about 4%, so companies all over the world are deciding to move their delegation in this rich country. Liechtenstein is the larger producer of false teeth as it covers about 20% of world market. One of the biggest companies in Liechtenstein is Hilti. If you ever travelled through eastern Switzerland or Austria, make a turn and take time to visit Principality of Liechtenstein.

In Liechtenstein there is a nice hostel 10 minutes from Vaduz. You can book a bed for 33 euros in dorms. There are also private rooms available.
