A visit to Görlitz in Saxonia will turn you into a time traveller on the spot. Here you can discover treasures from half a millennium of Bohemian, Saxon and Silesian history. It is the easternmost city in Germany, close to the river Neiße. Its location in the border triangle makes Görlitz an excellent choice for trips into the neighbouring countries, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Görlitz is first recorded back in 1071. The city grew at the intersection of Europe’s oldest and most important trade routes, one of them was the “Via Regia” which connected Kiev to Santiago de Compostela. The Via Regia is the oldest East-West trade route in Central Europe.
Görlitz owes its rise to a rich trade centre to this very special road. The Via Regia was not only a trade route but also a route on which artistic and cultural achievements travelled back and forth. Long before the idea of a unified Europe became popular, this trade route already conveyed a sense of what a continent without boundaries could be like.

The six cities of Bautzen, Görlitz, Kamenz, Lauban, Löbau and Zittau concluded an alliance for the joint protection of the trade routes in 1346. At that time, public peace in this region was often in danger. Upper Lusatia awakened desires among the sovereigns of the surrounding regions. Significant routes, such as the Via Regia, were stricken by highwaymen. The Six Towns League was given the blessing of the later Emperor Karl the Fourth. Under his aegis, the cities experienced boom years and a cultural revival. Splendid town halls and middle-class houses, majestic churches and proud fortifications bear witness to that time and create a unique aura combining throbbing life of the present with the breath of great history.

There are several museums, the historic part of the town with buildings from several centuries, interesting churches and a rich variety of cultural events.

Not only tourists are visiting Görlitz, even in Hollywood the historical scenery is well known. Shootings took place for the movies »Around the world in 80 days« and »Goethe«.
Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes have produced the movie »The reader« in Görlitz, but also the director Quentin Tarantino (»Inglourious Basterds«).

On 1. of December opens the brand new and modern Hostel Görlitz, right in the middle of the town. It offers 168 beds. All of the 42 rooms are furnished with showers and WC. Especially international guests are welcome.
