A map for travellers »Celje City of legends«

In the Youth centre of Celje we made a new tourist product – the first illustrated map of the city of Celje, which we named »Celje City of legends«.

The map presents a special view of Celje and is an innovative and creative approach to the presentation of the city through its myths and legends, which informs and invites visitors to explore the third biggest city in Slovenia.

Several people were involved in making the map, among them a visual artist Mark Požlep, who designed the map, the art historian Matija Plevnik, who wrote the text of the stories and the COE of the MCC Hostel Celje Klemen Sagadin, with Primož Brvar the head of Youth centre Celje, who together made the concept, helped with the texts and locations on the map.

The basis for the map are the stories found in myths and legends about the city, which were brought to life by artists in the Youth hostel in Celje, the MCC hostel. In desire to upgrade these stories and contribute to the rich tourist offer of the city, we’ve combined the stories of the map with the living tissue of the city itself. We did this from the point of view of a traveller, who accidently came to the city, with what he’d want to see, what he’d need and the best way to get there through eight thematic routes named: »Urbane legends from the hostel«, »Historical legends« »Night legends«, »Art and culture legends«, »Sport legends«, »Legendary food« »City legends« and »Legendary views«.

The map takes a tourist to locations worth seeing, but allows for various possibilities to make one’s own destinations and feel the city.

It is also fully illustrated, which makes it different from other similar products, for the handmade drawings and illustrations add a personal note to the story and offers a different insight for the visitor.

The added value of the product is also connecting the cultural, tourist and public aspects, creating a synergy that clearly states why connection of different arts, crafts and skills is needed to interpret the stories and traditions to visitors. And not to forget that these projects have good economic undertones, for they open new possibilities in tourism and sectors connected to is.

The map of Celje - City of legends – shows there are many stories, they just have to be told and presented. Our combined efforts created a unique product, which will allow the visitors from way beyond local borders to experience the city and offers a new dimension to the Slovenian hospitality and exploration of our culture, tradition and lifestyle.

Celje - City of legends is a great basis for further development of new tourist products, which we can build upon.
