Autumn is the perfect time for hiking and who knows better the most stunning places of the beautiful Salzkammergut Lake Region than the people who live there? Therefore, we asked our hostel managers for their favourite hiking tours. To discover the beauty of the region it doesn’t take a lot besides your hiking boots, a backpack with some food and drinks and an open eye for the astonishing landscape. Each of the hikes presented here starts at one of our hostels.
Gabi is hostel manager in Mondsee and presents to you a hike to the mountain Kolomannsberg. From the hostel you walk on romantic ways through fields and woods to the chapel St. Koloman. The chapel is the last well preserved church made of wood in Austria. Inside the chapel there’s a spring with healing water. It takes some endurance to walk 13 kilometres and climb 620-metre difference in altitude but you will enjoy a wonderful view including lake Mondsee with the famous mountain Schafberg.
Thomas & Johanna from the hostel in St. Gilgen have a favourite hike for families. Especially children will enjoy this tour of approximately 2 hours that leads from St. Gilgen through a forest to a formation of rocks with gaps and caves resulting from rockfalls where children can climb and crawl. After having fun at this natural climbing park the ascent to the Plombergstein mountain leads to the peak at 830 metres of altitude. Here you have a panoramic view of the whole lake Wolfgangsee and its surrounding mountains.
Karla from Bad Ischl prefers a hike on the town’s landmark mountain “Katrin”. The tour is called “seven lakes hike” and starts with a ride on the cable car to the upper station (with your hostelling international membership card you’ll get a discount, just ask for a voucher at the hostel’s reception). From there you start your 2 hours hike that leads to various observation points where you can survey seven lakes of the Salzkammergut-region.
Our hostels provide maps with detailed descriptions of the hiking tours presented here and many more hikes. They also offer packed lunch for your tours. For further information about the hostels and online booking please visit our website www.austrian-hostels.com.
