Burano is one of the islands in the Venetian Lagoon and sits only 7km from the main island of Venice. There’s something charming and romantic on this small island of colourful houses. The island is small and easily navigable. That makes walking along the small painted houses and canals quite a magical experience. Even the clothes hanging outside look quite adorable.
There are water taxis or vaporetti going to Burano from Venice, the island of Murano and from mainland Italy (e.g. from the Punta Sabbioni car park). The 24-hour travel card allows unlimited travel and costs 20 euros (worth buying if your trip includes the island of Murano or Venice). We saw the bell tower of the San Martino church from the sea and we knew that we would arrive soon.
After we had got off the vaporetto, we followed the crowd that headed down the main street and got lost among the red houses. We quickly realised that it’s a small island, easily navigable and very attractive. Even more so than in the photos and it hides so many beautiful details, from wall paintings and shops with charming souvenirs to house numbers made of ceramic tiles and miniature decoration by the flowers on windowsills.
You don’t need a map to explore this island. There’s a circular path guiding the visitors along the canal and across the island’s bridges (Burano has three streets and two channels), but it’s sometimes best to “get lost” in a hidden narrow street.
The colourful little houses are gorgeous. The legend says that the locals painted their houses so that the fisherman could easily spot their house through the fog when returning from the sea early in the morning.
While the Lagoon’s larger island, Murano, is known for its glass items, Burano is famous for its lacemaking. The town has a lace museum where visitors can learn about the history of the Burano lace. You can also visit one of the many excellent restaurants or enjoy a cup of coffee or maybe some Aperol Spritz on a terrace. Or perhaps you’ll prefer strolling around the island while munching on some fried calamari and chips.
