Top tourist attractions you shouldn’t miss

In Malta, you can explore more than 7,000 years of history, which you can combine with the Mediterranean Sea and beautiful scenery. Malta is located close to Tunisia, so you’re sure to feel the influence of the North African culture. You’ll be impressed when visiting Mdina, the old capital, since the city is surrounded by walls, plus you can get lost in the old streets, visit museums or treat yourself to some cake and coffee at one of the numerous cafés. October isn’t too cold in Malta, so you can also go diving in the crystal-clear sea. Malta has lots of excellent locations with reefs, sunken ships and natural marine caves that are hidden underneath the waves.

The country is also home to the oldest free-standing structure created by man. The Neolithic Ġgantija temples in Ġgantija, Gozo, have been standing there since 3600 BC and offer a glimpse into the island’s past. Then there’s also the Tarxien temples, the best-preserved temples in Malta that date back to the late neolithic period.

If you’re looking for a wonderful view, you should visit the Dingli cliffs. They’re 250 metres high. There’s nothing there, except a chapel and a short hiking trail. There are also no cafés or toilets, so you should equip yourself with food and drinks, especially on a hot day.

Our journalists’ thoughts on Malta

Our volunteer Nastja Stropnik Naveršnik has already travelled around Malta and she wrote two travel articles about it. In the first part, she realised that the capital, Valletta, was one of the most charming European capitals, while in the second part she talked about the memorable Popeye’s village and her first unsuccessful hitchhiking. Tilen and his friends decided to explore Malta’s history for a week during their study break. He enjoyed the local cuisine and captured every beautiful and hidden corner on camera. You can take a look at his photos in his article. Maja, too, has wonderful memories of Malta. She says that the longer you stay on the island, the greater the chances are of you falling in love with it.
