We’ll forgive you if the first thing you think of when imagining a getaway in always sunny Israel doesn’t happen to be skiing. But we worry you won’t forgive yourself if you don’t consider the idea at all.
Head North!
If you look past the glittering waters of the Mediterranean and legendary white sand beaches, up above the sun-drenched deserts and electric cities of Israel you’ll find Mount Hermon, which in the winter is a snow-topped ski destination, surrounded by a nature reserve. Mount Hermon is situated at the northern-most tip of Israel. Its top peak is 2,073 metres above sea level and because of its location, not only will you enjoy hitting the slopes on Mount Hermon, but you’ll also be treated to spectacular views of three different nations – Israel, Syria and Lebanon.
Ski vacations are often thought of as a rich person’s pastime, something only the well-to-do get to enjoy, but it’s easy for even the budget-conscious to treat themselves to a few days slicing down the side of Mount Hermon.
Hostelling International Israel provides great value accommodations all over Israel, including near Mount Hermon with its
Tel Hai Hostel branch.
The perfect getaway
Save some cash by staying at a hostel, there’s plenty of skiing to be had at Mount Hermon. The mountain features 45 km of ski runs with four chairlifts and five t-bars to provide skiing opportunities for everyone from the very beginners looking to avoid bumps and bruises to those who belong on the two olympic-standard runs, as certified by the International Ski Federation.
When you’re ready to hang up the poles for the day, you can enjoy a hot dinner, a bubbly drink or a mug of cocoa in the glass-enclosed restaurant on the mountain. There’s plenty of fun to be had without strapping on a pair of skis as well. The mountain offers tobogganing for kids, and a 950 m sled track.
