In one of the smallest European countries, despite the fact it has a very high standard, you can find accommodation in one of the ten budget friendly hostels. These take pride in their more then comfortable sleeping arrangements and have, this year, also put out a number of events.
Luxembourg hostelling association (
www.youthhostels.lu) is celebrating the 75 years of its existence. This was the reason for organizing some special events, but you can also enter a photo competition on their website.
There is no age limit for checking in to their hostels. Apart from rooms with several beds, they always have single and double bedded room on offer and they can accommodate families with small children as well. For the cheapest bed and breakfast accommodation you will pay between 16,20€ - 19,80€. This price is for members of the international hostelling organization only, otherwise you have to pay additional 3€ per night. After 6 aditional payments you automatically get your membership card.
The hostels are scattered across the whole country and their locations have inspired the organization of biking and hiking tours that include sleepovers at various hostels. Luxembourg is a remarkably varied and green country with around 500km of roads suited for bikers, and hikers have a few times longer hiking routes, all clearly marked. Hostels also offer indoor wall climbing, Nordic hiking and visits to adrenalin parks.
The biggest hostel is in the capital and has 240 beds in different types of rooms. The owners are also trying to attract businessmen and have several conference rooms ready. The hostel also has a very popular restaurant, that at the first glance resembles a student mess hall, but due to low prices and high quality cuisine many locals also like to dine there.
The hostel is located just below the mighty city wall, which is a part of the UNESCO world heritage. It’s not far to walk to the city center from there and I strongly suggest you walk there, for it is extremely difficult to find a parking spot in the center. Having a free parking in front of the hostel is a luxury on its own! The bus or train station are best reached by public transport, or better yet by a shuttle that offers low prices for guests of the hostel.
