The most interesting and unusual museums in Slovenia

What do you think of when you hear the word museum? Of dull times, when they drove us on various cultural and technical days, and we looked at photographs that we had no idea what they're representing or Tito's cars, even though we did not really have a clue about who Tito was? Or of the opportunity to learn something new outside of school, to learn words that you would not otherwise have, or to have an opportunity to see, hold in your hands, learn? Museums are great. They offer so many different, fun things and interesting activities, hide huge amount of knowledge. Interactive museums also offer a unique experience.

The school curriculum also dictates the guidelines for museum pedagogy and teachers go to the museum with students, which I think is the right thing to do. Here students also learn the manners in these institutions and teachers show them a "world outside the classroom". It is also true that we do not have the same taste and interests, everyone is interested in different things so there are countless different museums. It makes sense to visit a museum that offers what you like. If you are a great lover of nature, you will definitely enjoy the natural science museum in Vienna seeing the dinosaur skeletons, and you will probably be bored in the house of writer Franz Kafka in Prague.

Slovenia is a land of many museums, and we have more than 50 of them. Slovenian museums and galleries have a lot of value because they tell the story about the Slovenian space, (way of) life on our soil, customs, art, culinary arts, old dances, costumes since the prehistoric times. We have wonderful museums showing history (e.g. The Kobarid Museum and the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia, in Pivka, the Military History Park, Union's Beer Museum in Ljubljana, the Lipizzaner Museum, Salt Museum in Sečovlje, in Vitanje KSEVT - Center for Space Technologies Herman Potočnik Noordung, and in Planica, at the new Nordic Centre, the Museum of 80 Years History of the World's Achievements of Slovenian Ski Jumpers.

We also have some unique museums, which are really special and unusual.

Museum of coal mining of Slovenia

In the coal mining museum in Velenje you will learn about the life and work of the miners. In the museum, you will descend 160 meters deep down on the oldest mining lift. Do not worry, it's really old, but it's safe! In the museum, you will walk (and also take the train in one part) through 18 interesting scenes from the life and work of miners. In the museum, you will even meet the poet Anton Aškerc, see the miners’ apartment, their work tools, learn some mining greeting and eat the real miner's lunch. You will also be acquainted by a legendary "jump over the skin"; after that, you can jump over the skin yourself and try out this traditional Velenje tradition. In any case, the unique adventure is 160 meters below the surface, with helmets on the head, a real miner's snack and a smell of lignite.

After a long day, visit the HI Velenje on the outskirts of Velenje. You can do many interesting things in the city; maybe you can visit Lake Velenje, which offers countless activities: swimming, sunbathing, sunbathing, the best ice cream and many water games for children.

Herman's Den Celje

Herman's den in Celje is intended for very special visitors, children. The museum's curator is Herman Lisjak, a museum mascot, who helps the youngest to imagine the presented material and "travel" through the museum. It is the only children's museum in the country that displays the children's world in a colourful and interesting way, which is understandable and attractive to children. The museum has everything that children are interested in - a casino, a theatre, a pastry shop...

If you would like to stay in Celje for several days and explore this wonderful city of Alma Karlin and Celje Counts along the Savinja River, you are invited to a comfortable rest in HI Celje, which is really special. The guests are taken to the world of Celje myths and legends.

Franja Hospital

In the heart of unspoiled nature, in the hard-to-reach Pasica gorge, designed by the torrent Čerinščica, the partisan Franja Hospital is located. It has a walkway with wooden bridges and routing boards. It is very easy to find today, the path is safe and full of signposts, but in the past only few people knew about it. During the Second World War, Slovenian and Allied soldiers and soldiers of the then enemies were treated in impossible conditions. Before they took the wounded to the hospital, they covered their eyes so that they could not give out where they were treated. The Franja hospital was established on December 23, 1943, when seven wounded were sent to the hospital, and was attacked many times. Since 1945 (when patients and staff left wooden shacks), it is an important historical monument, a popular tourist spot and one of the most beautiful outdoor museums in Slovenia. You can see a room for the wounded, a bathroom, an X-ray, an operating room and an insulation room. It seems as though the time has stopped here in the second half of the 20th century and a nurse with an old injection in her hands will enter the door every time.

Slovenian Mountain Museum Mojstrana

When talking about the unusual and interesting museums in Slovenia, we cannot leave out the beautiful Slovenian mountain museum in Mojstrana, which presents the most beautiful Slovenian mountain and alpine stories. With the museum in Mojstrana, Slovenians received a glimpse of the rich history of Slovenian hiking from the first ascent to the Slovenian peaks until the conquests in the Himalayas. You will notice the museum as soon as you enter the Triglav Valley Vrata, since its architectural design is something special. In the museum you can see the mountain heritage, hunting trophies, equipment and clothing of hunters, you can make your bivouac or mini Aljaž’s tower.

In addition to all these museums, you should not forget the numerous galleries, castles, memorial rooms and other important cultural institutions. Slovenia is really beautiful, not only because of its natural landmarks, it also boasts cultural monuments, the heritage is truly exceptional. Escape from the everyday worries on a free Saturday or Sunday and go on a trip, feed your soul and rest your eyes. Have a good time and learn something new.
