Engadin

After ice age a valley was formed that lies at 1800 metres above sea level. It is 80 kilometres long and is one of the highest populated valleys in Europe. In the past you could only walk to the valley or with the horses or mules, but today the valley has a developed infrastructure. You can visit the valley on the road, railway and it also has some small airports. A special charm has the larch and pine tree forest with many lakes, which turn into ice in the winter and change into ski trails. And the mountains are also full of beautiful lakes, which are a little smaller. There are 13 ski centres in the region (St. Moritz, Pontresina, Celerina, Sils, Silvaplana, Maloja, Samedan, Bever, La Punt Chamues-ch, Madulain, Zuoz, S-chanf and Zernez). The valley can also boast with 322 sunny days a year.

The start of winter tourism

St. Moritz is famous for alpine skiing. The most famous ski centre is a synonym for style, tradition and quality. Ski slopes cover nine areas, which offer about 350 kilometres of tracks. There are a little less than 90 tracks, from beginner to experienced level. You will get the greatest skiing delights in Corvatsch, Corviglia and Diavolezza. Here you will also find many restaurants, ski cottages, snow bars where you can lie down and have a snack from a deckchair. For those who are not fans of big ski slopes, there are also some smaller ski slopes. They are suitable for families with smaller children and for those who are renewing their skiing skills. You can also visit some relaxing possibilities and cultural events in the ski villages.

Steep Prices

Hotels in St. Moritz are of the highest quality and the same goes for restaurants. The biggest reputation has the Kempinski Hotel, which looks like a castle from a fairytale in the centre of St. Moritz.  The choice for accommodation is big, from luxurious hotels to mountain cabins and even a hostel. But the price for the hostel is still around 50€ per night. The prices for food and drinks are also very high. It is completely usual for a beer to cost you around 10€ or more. Surrounding ski slopes have lower prices because they are less famous. You can sleep in a hostel St. Moritz

Host of world known sports attractions

St. Moritz hosted winter Olympic games in 1982 and 1948, followed by world cup in alpine skiing. It is one of three cities, which hosted the Olympic games twice. Innsbruck and New York are the other two cities. Bobsleigh world cup also happened here. In 1904 they opened 1722 metre long ice canal. St. Moritz is also a host of some less known sports events, from cross country skiing, mountain biking, mountain running, tour skiing, ski boarding, ice hockey, sailing and so on. Sailing might be unusual but St. Moritz is the annual host of Match Race St. Moritz.

St. Moritz is a nice city with beautiful nature and great ski slopes, which is something that every alpine skiing enthusiast wishes for.
